Week 6

Pre-Colombian is simply the time before European influence was poured over the Americas. It was before Columbus sailed the ocean blue, when indigenous men and women were free to live their lives as simple as they wanted.

The Aztec

I chose to look more deeply at the Aztec culture, because I was very interested in the city Teotihuacán. I am deeply amused at ancient relious beliefs. The fact that the Aztec's believed that 1. this is the place where they could go to become gods, and 2. that this is where the gods came to create man, really excites me. I enjoy hearing thisng like that.

1. Aztecs believed that Mother Earth was actually a montrous being with a body like an alligator.
This is another one of those things that make studying the Aztecs fun, they lived not only in a different time, but also in different world.
This is a picture of what they believed her to look like... YIKES!!!

2. Aztecs are believed to be the decendtents of the Aisian people who traveled across the Bering Straight during the ice age. Normally I would'nt think of Aztecs as being decended from an Asian line. I guess I was wrong.

3. Women in the Aztec's society were highly regarded in the religous world. They were often at the level of sacrificer, and were responsible for keeping the temple clean, as well as healing and clensing sick people.

Classmates

Alyssa said that "some of the art back goes back to the early 1900s."

I missed that part. thanks for mentioning it :)

Brandon spoke about the different mediuems of art in the museum "photography, sculpture, painting, music, dance, and drawings."

Jamison liked Roberto Fabelo's work and gave a timeline of his life.

Kathy thought the slideshow music was beautiful.

Kim says that "The paintings and sculptures depict expressions of everyday life; struggles, politics, and beauty." These are the most wonderful things to see represnted huh Kim. I agree!

Maria liked "vendedora de ayote" by Sergio Velasquez. She was suprised to see that a Latin fruit was used in the picture.

Michele learned a lot from the youtube videos and the MoLAA web page.

Paul said that the MOLAA is the only Modern and Contemporary Latin American Art museum.

Sara liked the piece "Plataia" by Marta Minujin. But couldnt find much info on it :(

Stacy watched the video "Cuba the Art Revolution" where 2 men gave their personal views on history that had taken place.

Week 5

What does MoLAA stand for?
Museum of Latin American Art. It is where the best of the best latin American artwork is showcased.

Explain what you see on the above video clips (be specific)?

Video 1 -> this is a simple photo slideshow. The pictures are great and the good thing about it is that the name plate and artist information is shown in the very next picture.

Video 2 -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sLkgMi5ZdQc This video is great! The pictures are shown zoomed in and you feel like you are actually there in the museum. It makes me want to go to the museum. The person who made the video obviously loves the museum and wanted to shere their passion.

What did you learn from the video clips (3 facts)?
A. The museum is huge! there are walls that are just dedicated to the artwork, as well as an outdoor Sculpture Garden.
B. The museum was opened in 1996 and is the ONLY museum dedicated to showcasing Latin American artwork.
C. The museum holds tours for schools and promotes the education of Latin American artwork.

What is one specific work in this location that attracted you? Give us the name, and related
background info which you must do more research on google.com.

It is so hard for me to choose a favorite. I really like everything in the sculpture garden. I think that sculpture is the best form of artwork. ‘Spiritual & Religious Practices’ cracks me up. I don't quite quite understand it, but it makes me smile just to try to look at it and find out where it begins and ends.

Alyssa believes that "found the way to live and be happy was to help others that couldn't better themselves."

Brandon mentioned that the Brazilian government did not agree with his ideas. and that in 1964 he was put in jail for his literacy training and then exiled from Brazil.

Jamison called him "a free thinking Brazilian educator."

Julisa quotes that "Paulo Regius Neves Freire was born September 19, 1921 in Recife, Brazil, and he died on May 2, 1997."
